We did it!
We made it through January.
January is a notoriously long month, but this year. Oof. It was A LOT. There’s the horrifying state of the nation, and the northeast spent most of the month in a deep freeze while the west coast was on fire. Literally. Here in my little corner of the world we slowed way, way down. In fact, I’m taking life day-by-day for a while. And it’s working for me. On January 20th I buried my head in the sand; I have stopped scrolling social media, and am focused on my family, my friends, and the things that are within my control. I know that I can’t necessarily live this way indefinitely, but it’s what I need right now.
Last January I told you about sneaking away with Sam for a night at Mirbeau Inn and Spa. Well, this year we did it again! Only we did it better! Because Sam turned 40 on January 23rd and we wanted to celebrate by being alone.
Last January our plans were nearly derailed when Quinn woke up with strep throat and Sam later gave herself a deep gash with a serrated kitchen knife. This year, nothing was going to stop us. We had our nanny scheduled to pick up Simon from school. Sam’s dad would be at our house when Quinn got off the bus. The plan was in motion. We were 20 minutes from departure … and then I got the call that is every parent’s worst nightmare: Our nanny and Simon had been in a car accident.
She sounded panicked, but told me they were both fine. After our call I practically flew out of the house and drove to the scene. Of course, I hit every red light en route. Finally, I saw the flashing lights as I waited in the traffic where the road was closed. I can get triggered by the sights and sounds of car accidents, so I repeated to myself, “Don’t have a panic attack.” I just wanted to focus on being calm for Simon.
I pulled over and ditched my car. I was running down Main Street when a paramedic shouted, “Are you mom?” He led me to an ambulance where my brave little boy sat, looking so small and overwhelmed and a bit shocked. Simon was going to be fine. In fact, his only “injuries” were scratches where the seatbelt dug into his shoulder on impact. After giving some information to the officer on the scene, I went to check on our nanny, who is in her late 60s and was quite shaken up. I left with Simon while she waited for her tow truck, and we made plans to check in with each other later.
When we got home, Simon was excited to tell Sam and her dad about the “car crash.” He was in good spirits, grandpa was there, and I didn’t want to get trapped in a loop of panic. So we left.
By the time we got to Rhinebeck we were ready for a cocktail and some spa time. And once again, Mirbeau did not disappoint. I love that little city and I really love that hotel and spa. After drinks at the Rhinecellar, we headed to the outdoor hot tub at Mirbeau. Perfection. Did I end my night with truffle fries in bed? I did. If that’s not the height of luxury than I simply don’t know what is.

As always, shout-out to Samuel’s Sweet Shop because, as most of you know, I really live for candy, especially Swedish sours. And another shout-out to Aroi for the delicious thai food. Really, all of our favorite spots in Rhinebeck are within a half block of each other on Market Street.
Our nanny is doing well but unfortunately, needs to replace her car. We are grateful that everyone was okay. I can’t wait to see what happens next year when we try to sneak away for our night at Mirbeau …
